Softly Noted vs Day One: which journal fits your evening?
One journal fits the ten seconds you have after a long shift. The other is built for long stories and photos. Two evenings, a side-by-side table, and our verdict.
Softly Noted records your day in two taps and lets you speak or write more when you want, which suits the busy evenings most of us have. Day One is a full journal for long entries, photos and several journals on many devices, which suits a slow Sunday.
So the question is whether your journal is a daily check-in or an archive. Prices and details here are as of October 2026.
Is your journal a daily check-in, or an archive?
A page a night is a big promise to keep. A check-in that takes ten seconds is an easier one.
That is where Softly Noted aims. It is a private mood diary and journal for iPhone and Android, with a desktop version in your web browser. Day One aims at something bigger and different, a place to keep your life’s stories. Both are good aims. Here is the table, then two evenings. The people in the evenings are examples, not real users.

Scene one: what does eleven at night look like?
It is 11:05. You have been on your feet since six. The last thing you want is a blank page, and the second-to-last thing is to feel bad about not wanting one.
With Softly Noted you open the app, tap how you feel (say, drained), tap Work in the tags, and save. That is two taps. The day is recorded, and a square in your Year in Pixels fills in. If you have a sentence left in you, tap the microphone and your words appear as text. Voice to text is free on every entry.
Softly Noted in numbers
From our own website, as of October 2026.
On the nights you do have more to say, the app helps. Today’s prompt waits on your home screen, and there are reflection packs and step-by-step guided journals, which go one gentle question at a time. Premium opens the full set, at $3.99 a month or $29.99 a year. For a routine built around these nights, see our two-minute evening check-in.
Nothing here needs setting up. There is no account, your written entries are encrypted on your phone, and the app lock with a PIN or Face ID is free. A weekly review and a searchable journal build up quietly in the background. Softly Noted is a reflection tool, not medical care.
In our view, that is the right amount of journal for a Tuesday night, and it is a view about fit, not a fact about any other app.

Scene two: where does a slow Sunday suit Day One better?
Now a Sunday afternoon. The tea is stewed just right, and you have photos from a weekend away that you want to keep properly. You want to write about the drive, the beach and what your aunt said at lunch.
Here Day One is stronger, and we would say so. It is a full-featured journaling app that takes text, photos, videos, drawings and audio, with tags, favourites and a map view. You can keep separate journals for trips, work and family, and its free plan allows unlimited journals. It runs on iPhone, Android, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch and in a browser, lists end-to-end encryption, and offers printed books.
What a year costs
The yearly plans side by side, in US dollars.
According to its pricing page in October 2026, the free Basic plan has one photo per entry and one device, and Silver is $49.99 a year with up to 30 photos or videos per entry and unlimited devices.

Check-in or archive?
What each journal is built around.
If long journals have defeated you before, journaling for people who hate journaling is a kinder place to start than another big notebook.

What does a year of two-tap check-ins give you?
A habit that survives. After a few weeks your Year in Pixels shows the heavy weeks, the good runs and what came with them. Tag your days with Work, Sleep or Family and the patterns start to talk, and our guide on Year in Pixels shows how to read them.
There are reminders at the time you choose and a home-screen widget that opens your check-in. If you skip a week, nothing breaks. Your journal waits, and you pick up where you are.
You can search the whole journal, star days you want to find again, and see what you wrote on this day a month or a year ago. You can export it as a PDF or CSV, or make a password-protected backup for your next phone.
Could you keep both?
Plenty of people do, because the two ask for different things.
- Weeknights: open Softly Noted, tap how you feel, add a tag, and go to bed.
- Sunday: if you want the full story, with photos, write it where long entries live.
- Once a month: look at your Year in Pixels, and see which squares deserve a story.
If you are choosing only one tonight, go back to the question at the top. If your journal is a daily check-in, start with Softly Noted. If it is an archive, Day One was made for that.
Fair comparison note: Day One is a product name or trademark of its owner. JPott Studios is not affiliated with, sponsored by or endorsed by it. Softly Noted and Day One: your questions
Is Softly Noted lighter than Day One?
In our view, yes for a quick evening: it records a day in two taps and asks nothing more. Day One does more with long entries, photos and several journals, so it depends what you want from a journal.
Is Softly Noted free?
Yes, it is free to use, including voice to text, search, reminders, the app lock and export. Premium is $3.99 a month or $29.99 a year, as of October 2026.
Is Day One free?
Day One has a free Basic plan with unlimited journals, one photo per entry and one device, plus Silver and Gold paid plans. Silver is $49.99 a year, as listed on Day One’s pricing page in October 2026.
Can Day One track my mood?
Day One has a Mood Tracker template you can add to a journal, with reminders. It is a template rather than a dedicated mood calendar, as far as its own pages show. Softly Noted puts the mood check-in and Year in Pixels at the centre.
Is Softly Noted good for long journal entries?
You can write as much as you like, and prompts and guided journals help, but it is built for short check-ins. For long stories with many photos and several journals, Day One is made for it.
Does Softly Noted work on a Mac?
There is a desktop version that runs in a web browser, with nothing to install. Day One has native Mac and Apple Watch apps.
