Softly Noted is a private mood diary and journal that starts with a two-tap check-in and lets you speak or write as much as you like, which makes it a good pick if you want words in your record as well as colours. Daylio is a tap-first tracker built more around activity icons and charts, and both apps have a Year in Pixels.

Our short verdict is below, with the table first. Prices and details here are as of October 2026.

Softly Noted or Daylio: which one should you pick?

Pick Softly Noted if you want a quick mood check-in that can grow into a few spoken or written lines on the days you have more to say. Pick Daylio if you mostly want to log activities and read the charts. For many readers the first description fits better, and here is the evidence.

What does Softly Noted give you that a pure tapper does not?

It gives you a place for words, without making you use it.

Most nights the check-in really is two taps. You pick one of 15 feelings, add a tag like Sleep or Work if you want, and save. Your square in the Year in Pixels fills in. If you have more to say, tap the microphone and your words appear as text. Voice to text is free on every entry, so a tired Thursday can still end with “long meeting, glad it’s over” in your own voice.

When you do not know what to write, the app helps. Today’s prompt waits on your home screen. There are reflection packs and step-by-step guided journals, which go one gentle question at a time. Premium opens the full set of packs and journals, and it costs $3.99 a month or $29.99 a year.

Then it does the looking back. You can search your whole journal, star days to find again, and read a weekly review. After a few weeks your patterns start to show, and our guide to noticing a mood pattern explains how to read them without any maths.

Privacy is part of the design. There is no account needed, written entries are encrypted on your phone, and the app lock with a PIN or Face ID is free. If you want the whole thing on a bigger screen, there is also a desktop version that runs in your web browser. Softly Noted is a journal and reflection tool, not medical care.

Where is Daylio stronger?

Daylio is the better fit if what you want to learn is “what I did” as much as “how I felt”. You log activities alongside your mood, and its site describes charts that range from simple mood lines to correlation stats. It also offers goals and reminders, and its Premium list names unlimited moods, 2000+ extra icons and emojis, and custom colours. Its App Store release notes mention sliders for factors such as sleep, stress, energy and pain, plus Siri support. Daylio keeps a free unlimited version, and its own FAQ says Premium adds extras such as advanced stats.

What each app puts first

The question each one is built around.

Activities and chartsFeelings in your words
Our view, not a measurement.

If a chart of “gym days versus flat days” is what you are after, Daylio was made for that.

Which one are you? A four-question quiz

This is a friendly nudge, not research. Answer with your first instinct, and count your As and Bs.

1. At the end of a good day, you most want to...

  • A. See it as a dot on a chart, next to what you did.
  • B. Say a sentence or two about why it was good.

2. When you look back over a month, you hope to find...

  • A. A pattern, like “days with exercise score higher”.
  • B. A record of how you actually felt, in your own words.

3. On a flat, tired night, you would rather...

  • A. Tap a few icons and be done.
  • B. Say a few words out loud and let them be typed for you.

4. Your ideal screen looks like...

  • A. A neat dashboard you can customise.
  • B. A quiet page with soft colours that does not ask for much.

Mostly B: Softly Noted is likely to suit you. You want the two-tap speed, and you want your words to be part of it.

Mostly A: Daylio is likely to suit you. You like counting, tweaking and seeing links between what you do and how you feel.

A mix: Normal. Plenty of people are both a counter and a writer, depending on the week, and the two-week plan at the end is built for you.

How can you try Softly Noted this week?

Give it seven days, at the same moment each day, so you can feel the difference.

  1. Pick one moment that already exists, like the kettle or the bus stop, and set one gentle reminder for it.
  2. Days one to three: tap only. Choose a feeling, add a tag, save. That is the whole check-in.
  3. Days four to seven: add one spoken line each night. Even “long meeting, glad it’s over” counts.
  4. On day seven, open your Year in Pixels and look at the colours. Did a week of squares tell you something you did not already know?

If you want to compare, run a tap-only week in Daylio first. Both are free to start, and the best app is the one you open on a flat Wednesday without talking yourself into it. If a full year of colour is what keeps you going, our guide to Year in Pixels shows what it can tell you. And if journals usually fall off your plate by week two, journaling for people who hate journaling is a kinder place to start.

Fair comparison note: Daylio is a product name or trademark of its owner. JPott Studios is not affiliated with, sponsored by or endorsed by it. What we say here comes from its own pages and public store listings, read in October 2026, and may have changed since, so please check the source before you decide. Lines marked “our view” are our opinion.

Softly Noted and Daylio: your questions

Is Softly Noted like Daylio?

They share the quick mood check-in and a Year in Pixels. Softly Noted leans toward writing, with voice to text, prompts and guided journals, while Daylio centres on activities and stats.

Which is better for journaling?

For a journal, Softly Noted is built around it: voice to text on every entry, a daily prompt, reflection packs, guided journals and a searchable journal. Daylio supports notes, writing templates and voice memos, so you can journal there too.

Is Softly Noted free?

Yes, it is free to use, including voice to text, search, reminders, the app lock and export. Premium is $3.99 a month or $29.99 a year, as of October 2026. Daylio has a free unlimited version with Premium extras, so check the app for its current prices.

Does Softly Noted have a Year in Pixels?

Yes. It is a grid of your year, one square a day, coloured by the feeling you picked. This year is free, and past years are part of Premium. Daylio has a Year in Pixels too.

Which one is more private?

Softly Noted needs no account, encrypts written entries on your phone and locks with a PIN or Face ID, and the lock is free. For Daylio, read its own privacy information in the app or on its website.

Can I use both?

Yes. Many people try each for a week or two and keep the one they open without effort. Using one for taps and the other for words is fine too.
